Are you new?

No one has mentioned one of the most important reasons: economics. The people of the class shown in S & S had money to consider as a reason to marry. Girls such as E & MA were not attractive marriage prospects without a larger income. In many ways S & S is a fairy tale, with a twist: instead of E & MA suddenly being marriage material because of a long-lost inheritance or being found to be of royal blood, they are married for love alone.
