in consequence of the missive, GR: The Old Gentleman, penned by Shauna
You betcha! Every time and culture has its own ingrained ideas of "how things are done" that is almost (IMO) like brain-washing. No matter how fond and grateful the old gentleman might feel toward the Dashwood women, in the end the important thing was that the estate should be kept intact within the "real" family (i.e: the person who had the power to hand down the family name to the next generation - the *male* heir).
] Was he expecting the elder Mr. Dashwood to outlive him by more than a year?
Yes, I think he did, because after all Henry Dashwood was his nephew - a generation younger than himself.
