GR: Life Expectancy   Written by kathleen (elder) (8/11/2003 6:45 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: Ripe Old Age, penned by Valerie Mc.
Are you new?

] I just saw a statistic that the average life expectancy in the United States 100 years ago was only 49. While some folks lived to their 70s and 80s, a lot didn't.

] Those lines had always impressed me with how short an adult life could be expected.

Actually, the low life expectancy was caused primarily by high infant mortality. Mrs Dashwood, having made it to age 40 and being past childbearing (unless she remarries), would have had a life expectancy of 20+ years. For adults of that time, the chances of living into one's 70's or 80's was not much different than it was today.

So, John Dashwood is incorrect about his step-mother's probable future years.
