in consequence of the missive, GR: Emma Thompson's Edward, penned by Annette J.
] Emma Thompson's screenplay obviously made Edward a much more attractive character than he was in the book, in part, I believe, to appeal to modern viewers who may not have read S & S. There is also the possibility that since the movie ED is older than the ED of the novel, a totally dull EF could make her interest seem motivated primarily by desperation rather than by admiration, affection, and then love.
I agree that Emma Thompson made Edward much more attractive, but I don't think I can buy that she did it to not make Elinor seem a desperate spinster! ;-)
I think it natural to want to know why someone fell in love, and in order to do that you need to see some interaction. I accept that Elinor and Edward fell in love with such little evidence because JA tells me so. ;-) But, if I'm going to watch a movie - a visual medium - I need to see it, rather than be told. And by fleshing out his character, having the extra scenes between he and Elinor and Margaret, I do see it, and accept it. It was very well done of Thompson, I thought. ;-)
