In addition to the love-match, there's the who-do-you-know factor - Elinor may have nothing herself, but lack of fortune could be ameliorated somewhat with good connections (after all, Mrs. Dashwood's life is made easier by her connection with Sir John Middleton, although she hasn't got much herself). And Elinor's connection is very close - her half-brother! He's wealthy enough, and under ordinary circumstances, she might have been able to count on him as a good connection. Also, there is the little fact that Elinor and Edward would not be the first Ferrars-Dashwood connection - John is married to Fanny, after all, so it's not a completely outlandish idea that another Ferrars should marry another Dashwood. If John and Fanny (and Mrs. Ferrars) were the sort of people to look away from their cashboxes once in a while, it might even be seen as desirable.
