I knew of Pride and Prejudice, and I knew of the S&S2 movie, but only as a pretty-looking period drama. I even tried to go see it with my mother, but our plans fell through; if I had, my Austen experience may just have been a bit different.
At the beginning of the year, we knew we would be moving, and my DH and I flew to our new location to go house hunting. I took along several books to while away the hours on the plane, and P&P was one of the ones I selected. I struggled with the language, but eventually finished the book thrilled with this new auther I had discovered. From that point until we were moved, I really didn't have time to read much of anything.
In our new city, we were temporarily stationed in a little apartment while our house was finished, so there I was with no library card, surviving off the bounty of my in-laws (I read a lot of Louis L'Amour because my dad-in-law likes Westerns), and trying to spend as little as possible as we saved for our down payment. My one book binge was Sense and Sensibility. I loved it from the moment I read it. It didn't sparkle as much as P&P, and those of us who love it well surely can agree that "sparkle" is not really an appropriate word to describe S&S. I ended up loving it better than P&P because of its theme of choosing true love over infatuation; I was rooting for Colonel Brandon from the time he first appeared in the novel (though it never occurred to me that he would look anything like Alan Rickman -- sigh).
