when/how/why   Written by Cass (8/7/2003 11:42 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, When/how/why did you...?, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

During one summer when I was in high school, I was rummaging through the public library for amusement; my mother suggested P&P and S&S. I read them in that order and liked P&P--but to be honest, I didn't particularly enjoy S&S then. The main characters didn't appeal to me: Elinor seemed dull, Marianne overwrought. I much preferred the liveliness of Elizabeth Bennet.

Last spring I (several years older and more serious) reread it and was able to appreciate the gravity of their situation, and suddenly they made sense to me. I appreciated the book a lot more after that; then I saw S&S2 last summer and Alan Rickman drove me over the edge. (-;
