I dont think that JA is vague. She makes no referenece to the Ferrars family having any commercial undertakings. SHe DOES refer to a landed estate, in Norfolk which is clearly one of at least 2 and very likely several estates.
She has no trouble in saying that the Jennings fortune is derived from trade and that Mrs J while good natured is vulgar. (she may be kindly in her way but she alos says that the "little love child - Eliza Williams - may be apprenticed out at small cost" to Brandon, so she's not necessarily the most sensitive person towards her servants.)
It never occurred to me to think that the Ferrars fortune derived from trade, as I think that JA would have said so.. and she didn't.
