I think I would have rated it 4 1/2 stars (as I think further about its rating) as there were a few places where I would have appreciated some editorial comment. As I recall these would fall in the neighborhood of comparison of the modern definition with Georgian England usage.
I found your review amazingly thorough. I might mention that I listened to the audible.com version as I read along with the new Spacks and didn't find the errors you found perhaps because I am not good at multi-tasking. :) (I might comment that audible.com has more than a dozen narrations (unabridged) and I don't know which one I have as its icon does not appear in iTunes for some reason and I have long since forgotten.)
You should definitely be commended for an excellent and thorough review. :)
Not to stray further off topic but I also have S&S in the pricey annotated Cambridge Edition and it is not as thorough and useful as the Spacks IMHO although it has other advantages, particularly in its introduction. I haven't seen the one by David M. Shapard but know his reputation is good for other JA annotations. Are you familiar with the Shapard or any other annotations?
