And I think JA was being sarcastic and ironic at the end, in the passage when she called his repentance "sincere". S&S is full of JA's sarcasms and ironies, i.e. she said that Mrs Ferrars was always fearful of "the reproach of being too amiable" and so delayed her consent to Edward's marriage to Elinor!
