I think before I hadn't read the novels well-enough to notice her absolute selfishness. But I think I was always sympathetic to Elinor, partly because I am closer in personality to her (though not as admirable as her, I believe).
I think society now approves of Marianne's type of behaviour, a particular type of honesty of feeling, over Elinor's more considered and private approach.
It sounds like you are enjoying the novel. I must ask, what do you think of Miss Lucy Steele? In a way, she is one of my favourite characters. Not for who she is, which is a reprehensible so-and-so, but to me she is one of the most well drawn duplicitous characters, whose motives are understandable, but are carried out with cruelty.
