With her 50,000 pounds, she might even have managed to get an impoverished nobleman with a title, even if her father had acquired the fortune through trade, if all she wanted was rank and position.

I think readers are unsympathetic to Sophia because she was Marianne's rival, and also because of what Willoughby most unkindly said about his wife in his very selfish so-called "confession". But we might see things differently if we try to look at it from Sophia's POV. I think Marianne, Eliza and Sophia were all Will's victims, and Mari actually turned out to be the luckiest of them all, to be able to escape him. Eliza ended up with his illegitimate child, and Sophia ended up married to him.
