Why   Written by Stephanie (3/8/2013 11:51 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Why did she?, penned by Rae Elaine
Are you new?

I have seen it supposed that Sophia Grey was the daughter of wealthy tradespeople, and that marrying into the gentry was her ambition. Willoughby, as a landed gentleman, counted.

However, even if the case (where did I read that?) was as good as I remember it being for that theory, the best reason for picking Willoughby, that I can think of, is the immature, insecure attitude that many females adopt upon being of an age to date nowadays -- that there is a certain 'win' associated with being seen with a handsome, charismatic man. Superficial, yes, but prevalent!
