Duelling   Written by Bridget D (2/22/2013 7:11 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Dueling with honour, penned by Srirup
Are you new?

I dont know if deloping would be considered morally reprehensible but I think it was considered wrong,as a general rule. If you get to the point of having a duel, then you should do it properly, not delope.

And it was by the time of the novel, duelling was likely to get you on a murder charge, if someone died.. not a "slap on the wrist".
IIRC Elinor didn't think that the duel was necessary, she just accepted that to a "man and a soldier", it would look necessary.. so she understood why Brandon did it.
THe fact that the 2 men fought, was considered to satisfy the demands of honour. It wasn't necessary to kill or wound..
