Dueling with honour   Written by Srirup (2/22/2013 5:48 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Honor, penned by Kristina F
Are you new?

There has been so much interesting discussion about the dueling in S&S but I confess I am still not sure what exactly Brandon had in mind with his “Punish” vs “Defend” though it seems accepted that it was a necessity; even Elinor conceded that.

I am persuaded by Kathleen that just the fact Brandon challenged Willoughby and they met, irrespective of the outcome was enough to satisfy the honor code.

The other point is that I am not convinced that if either party “deloped”, willfully missed in pistol duelling, it would have been that dishonourable. Strictly speaking deloping was against the Irish Code but if it was that morally reprehensible then how did William Pitt and Duke of Wellington get away with it? And as Prime Ministers too?
In fact the casual way Brandon says “we returned unwounded” makes me think that deloping was entirely on the cards and that is what indeed happened.
