...all sorts of legal consequences, I doubt Brandon intended to kill Willoughby. My take is that Brandon did not think Willoughby should entirely escape the responsibility for his actions towards Brandon's ward. Therefore, Brandon felt that honor compelled him to challenge Willoughby and make him defend himself. I do not think Brandon expected to kill Willoughy, but defeat him? Yes. Injure him? Perhaps.
