in consequence of the missive, What are your thoughts..., penned by Kristina F
S&S2 should get credit for being the first adaption to put in Margaret, but they blew it by staging Barton Cottage near the sea. I do not believe John Dashwood is as greedy as Fanny. That is an achievement requiring a true villan. His major defect is cowardice, which may be puppyism - to be kind, by his continual reduction of what it take to meet his promise to his father of helping the girls, and his acceptance of Fanny's fibs about his father's legal abilities (BTW, a thread on "Fanny's Fibs" could be a whopper. We do not want to break Pemberley's servers). The book describe his promise keeping to no more than their few months visit at Norland before they could get a new situation, and I believe, that was not too far out of the norm for family visits. Another implicit message could be more rightly recieved. That is the groom is so happy with the blessings of his new wife that he wish to share some happiness with the parish, and the coins are as good as easter eggs; better because they are negotiable and tend not to break in a pocket. |
