Yes but he didn't...so while I would certainly say they weren't poor, they were restricted. John should have done something to make up for the fact that Mr D hadn't been able to improve their fortunes, such as settling another few thousand on them or making them an annuity. I dont think that he'd have been expected to chip in and give them large dowries, but he should have been willing to give them a bit more to give them a bit more independence and a better chance of marriage.. And to invite them to stay more often, in Lonodn where they would meet more men but he was clearly reluctant even to do that for them.
