not poor   Written by Nikki N (2/2/2013 9:48 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Poverty, penned by Bridget d
Are you new?

They were not poor, as 700 a year was the avrerage gentry income. It is just that they were used to a much larger income -- the Norladn estate was 4000 a year. So to come down from over 4000 to 500 -- well, they must feel it. But if they always had an average income of 700 while Mr Dashwood lived, they wouldn't have felt the reduction. They had to adjust from a privileged upper-class lifestyle to a more ordinqry middle-class lifestyle, NOT to a poverty stricken lifestyle. And since John Dfsashwood is rich, he should have helped to maintain them in the lifestyle to which they were accustomed -- this was a society where brothers were suppposed to take care of their sisters.
