I momentarily forgot the Dashwood ladies have an income...
You are right, while they have this money, they wouldn't be permitted to go on the Parish.
Realistically shouldn't need to if John had kept his promise to his father to help them.
However, we are still looking at an income of five hundred pounds a year between four women and if not for Sir John Middleton's kindly offer of the cottage at Barton Park, the Dashwood ladies would be in very poor circumstances similar to Miss Bates, even if Elinor and Marianne do work as governesses.
To some degree I wonder Fanny did not suggest to John his sisters work as governesses.
