My first experience with Sense and Sensibility occurred when I was 10 years old. I came downstairs to get a glass of water, and discovered my mother crying in the family room, watching Sense and Sensibility (1995). I'm not sure why she let me stay and watch the movie with her, but she did, and I instantly fell in love with Elinor and Marianne. The next day we ordered a collection of all of Jane Austen's novels and I began to read.
I remember quite a lot during that first read of a Jane Austen novel. I adored Elinor and thought that Edward was the perfect man. I felt that Marianne was rather silly, and despised Willoughby from the beginning, knowing what I did about him. I thought that Colonel Brandon was an amazing man and found Marianne rather foolish for not pursuing him from the outset. I think that my favorite part my first go around with Sense and Sensibility, though, was that the love story came second to the story of Elinor and Marianne's relationship. It was such a gentle tale, yet filled with emotion and passion.
But the main reason that I love Sense and Sensibility is that it introduced me to Jane.
