At the Christmas festivities in 1807 to January 1808, Jane Austen again took part in a production of private theatricals at Manydown; the home of her friends the Brigg-Withers.

This occasion was recalled by William Heathcote, the son of Elizabeth Heathcote (nee Briggs) who had returned to the family home with her son.

Many years later he:

“remembered being at a Twelfth-Night Party where Jane Austen drew the character of Mrs Candour and assumed the part with great spirit”.

(Jane Austen: A family Record, Le Faye.)

Mrs Candour was a part in Sheriden' s The School for Scandal and , by coincidence, was made famous by one of Henry Austen's neighbours in London-Jane Pope.
