The waltz was new in England during the Regency and was something of a scandal because of the way a man held a woman. The waltz originated in Austria, specifically, Vienna, and was popular in France and elsewhere on the continent before being picked up in England. It's my understanding that the dance they knew as a waltz would be called by the same name today, i.e., not a caleigh.
