Perhaps, as JulieW said, the role was somewhat flexible; but then, perhaps Mrs. Morland would not have thought the arrangements for the visit to NA appropriate in contrast to Mrs. Allen's judgment (although surely Mr. Allen would have been involved in the decision to let Catherine go to NA).
(And by the way, Mandy, excellent post!)
