My niece was telling me of her trip to South Africa and mentioned that she had driven through a vineyard which boasted links with Jane Austen. I immediately protested that I knew of no such links, till she mentioned the name of the vineyard, Groot Constantia. Then of course I recollected Mrs. Jennings’s cure all for all manner of stuff from “cholicky gout” to “a diasappointed heart”. (S&S Ch 30)

Still I had doubts about whether the wine travelled that far in those days but apparently the South African wine was indeed exported to Europe, and Asia and also to the Americas. A favourite of Napoleon, it seems he requested a glass on his deathbed. Another interesting tit bit is that a broken wine bottle from 1774 was found on a Delaware shore in 2004!
