only worn by those who could afford their upkeep, and wearing them out in town or even just walking around one's estate during the day could make them very dirty and dingy.

In Mansfield Park, Mrs. Norris relates how Mrs. Whitaker, the housekeeper at Sotherton, "has turned away two housemaids for wearing white gowns." The housemaids' actions were frowned upon because it was seen as imitating their betters, or professing to be of higher status than the one they actually occupy by wearing white.
