] Does anyone know if the word came into English military usage as a result of the French revolutionary wars or whether it is older?

There were Volontaires-Etrangers in the French army in the American Revolutionary Wars, which might be considered the origin of the French Foreign Legion. Here's a link to a web site for the Volontaires-čtrangers de Lauzun (Lauzun's Legion)
