in consequence of the missive, Winchester, penned by Leif G-n
Leif G-n: The house in which JA died is very easy to find. It is right outside the cathedral gates on College Street (I believe No. 8), and is bright yellow with a placque stating its claim to history. The house is owned by a local college and houses visiting professors; it is not usually open to the public. In 1998, on a wonderful JA tour sponsored by JASNA (run by a JA fan, BookAdventures Inc.), we were thrilled to be able to visit the house. In the second floor room where she died (with a lovely bow window overlooking the cathedral walls), our guide read the letter Cassandra wrote after Jane died: "She was the sunshine of my life..." (or something close to that). Needless to say, we were all in tears. |
