It might be worth remembering that JA was quite familiar with another place which not only housed the righest and the poorest people in Britain, but also was the biggest centre for trade, and filthy industry of all kinds, had the highest aerial pollution indeces on record, a river that was unfit for any kind of water extraction whatsoever, and was renowned for being unhealthy to one and all.

She used it as a backdrop for many scenes... but never composed poems standing on one of its bridges, described the effects of a riot or a fire on its buildings, or wondered what it would be like to be tired of it.
