I forgot Mr. Shepherd, Sir Walter's agent, who comes across as a knowing psychologist and a clever manipulator when he convinces Sir Walter that because of his status, word about Kellynch being to let would unavoidably get out, when Shepherd had clearly already found Admiral Croft. We know no more of Shepherd's personal life, however, than we do of the status of Mrs. Clay's former husband.
