the pond banks were rat-infested and he would have picked up Weil's Disease? At the very least he must have been bitten to death by clouds of midges? As to the present day, Spencer, I understand it is a dangerous business to go swimming in inland waters - what with pesticides, herbicides, run-offs from agricultural/industrial processes, and all sorts of pollution? Take care!
