Park Honan describes Martha Lloyd as JA's closest friend. With JA being 10 years younger than Martha, I am reminded of the relationship between Elizabeth Bennet and Charlotte Lucas: a younger, lively, intelligent girl and an older, staid and practical woman with no thoughts of romance.

Just an idea.
