Not the mysterious gentleman   Written by Cinthia (2/27/2003 10:50 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, BBC Programme - I think I remember..., penned by Katy L
Are you new?

] ... seeing something on a recent BBC programme about Jane Austen's life.

] I remember something about a young man from Ireland that she possibly fell in love with, but for some reason he ended up getting married to someone else.

The Irish one is no other than Tom Lefroy. I've not seen the BBC documentary but from what those who have, they didn't mention the mysterious gentleman at all in the programm.

Caroline is asking for the mysterious gentleman who according to Caroline Austen, Cassandra mentioned as deserving of her sister. They met them during their summer holidays in Devonshire. But this sounds more a legend than a fact, if we tried to be objective. We have no name of the gentleman, nor the precise seaside place where they met him, nor the precise year.

Still, a part of me wants to believe there was one mysterious gentleman who could be considered JA's true love. The Lyme scenes of Persuasion inspired by that seaside unfortunate romance.
