John Knight Hinton   Written by Caroline (2/27/2003 10:22 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Not an Austen connection., penned by Anielka
Are you new?

John Knight Hinton (1774-1846) and his sister Jane, later Mrs James Ventris, were descendents of a previous rector of Chawton, and apparently were the last descendents of the original Chawton Knights. The Chawton Estate had been entailed to them under the will of old Elizabeth Knight, and they 'cited some informality in the disentailing deed of 1758', they ussued proceedings against Edward in 1814, seeking to eject him form the property. Also involved was James Baverstock, the Hinton's nephew, a clever and rather scampish brewer, of Alton'.

As far as I can see, this applied to the Chawton estate only, and not to the Godmersham one. Again, I put this info up for consideration only- I really would like not to discuss this lawsuit until the proper time.

(Ifo from Rupert Willoughby's Chawton: Jane Austen's Village . Hope it helps, Anielka )
