Are you new?

] ] There exists, in the Hampshire County Records Office, a sheet of paper torn from Steventon Parish registers and .

] This was mentioned in Jane Austen's Regency World, a new magazine put out by the Jane Austen Centre in Bath. Maggie Lane wrote the article about the names Jane used for her characters and mentioned it. But I can't remember any more than that and the mag is at home!

I checked my mag at once and Maggie Lane mentions this as the first inkling that Jane was particularly interested in certain names. Saying that she is recycling the same limited number of names in her six novels and that no fewer than five heroes of her mature fiction are foreshadowed in the names of these two imaginary lovers. She is including Mr Howard as the probable hero of the unfinished fragment The Watsons. Maggie Lane thinks the names Jane preferred are romantic, medieval, aristocratic.

According to this article the parish reg. entries were made when Jane was about 15.
