First dowdy. Yes, this is one of the things that was wrong in P2 and P3. Anne is dowdy in them and she obviously shouldn't be! I used the wrong word for Amanda Root- she isn't abject, but she is nervous, timorous (Stephen VI) and dowdy.
"More than seven years were gone ... but she had been too dependant on time alone..."
This is an incredibly ambiguous part of the book (and perhaps one of the reasons why I love it?!). I really wonder what would have happened if she had met a man who did have *some* conversation and grace- and none of the slickness of Mr. Elliot- perhaps not immediately after the break with FW- but after a few years.
What would have happened if Persuasion was not about Wentworth coming back at all- but Anne going out into society (maybe Bath) and meeting a non-crafty, *good* Mr. Elliot?
"How she might have felt had there been no Captain Wentworth in the case, was not worth enquiry; for there was a Captain Wentworth"
How indeed, I ask!
