I think you are right. Sally Hawkins was abject and Amanda Root was nervous. I saw P2 and P3 side by side and noted the differences between them.
"I don't see Anne as being sad, more suffering the occasional pang of regret for what might have been."
I am not so sure about this. Each time I read the book, I do feel Anne suffers much more than the occasional pang of regret. I think it is a constant pain for her.
But if you think her regret is occasional, would you also say that had FW not come back, and Mrs S not told her the truth about Mr Elliot, she would have married him?
