AR's Anne does not wallow in her misery the way SH's Anne does. She goes through the motions while doing what needs to be done. Anne Elliot is a strong woman. I see her as resigned. She is also reserved and self-contained. She does not burst into tears at the slightest provocation.
I love AR in the role of Anne. Her performance is very subtle, and she shows just how strong and capable the character is. SH is just so wimpy in comparison. They had to go out of their way to show her "capableness" by that ridiculous collarbone scene. I also think that, since AR had a vastly superior supporting cast and a vastly superior script, it was easier for AR to put in an outstanding performance. RPJ was given nothing to do but stand around and glower. Amanda Hale's Mary Musgrove was just awful. And so on.
P3 had so much potential. I desperately wanted to like it. But the reality saddened me because I love this book so much.
