Screenwriters also have to solve the puzzle of adjusting the story to fit into a certain format, with some sort of time limit. I sympathise with P2's and P3's decisions to treat the Mrs Smith knowledge-withholding issue as an awkward and controversial side-note, and to cut it clean away.
Also, these shifts in characterisation are often no bigger than the differences between readers' interpretations of the original books. For example, I suspect that the question "How much do you laugh at or with Anne?" would get quite a spread of responses.
How the screenwriters then spend some of the time they save is another issue! I'm not a fan of cramming in parts of the cancelled chapters.
