But Anne is so pleased that no one knows about her short-lived engagement, I think she is avoiding comment by choosing not to.
Or else, she COULD NOT have, and still ended up romantically open to Capt. Wentworth? Maybe Author Austen could not have Anne wear the cap, and still tell this story?
I have never heard of anyone taking off the garb of a spinster after wearing it for awhile, but that does not mean much -- it would be a rare event, if it has ever happened, and I only know what the regency scholars tell me. I was hoping some one knew.
