I can't see why you wouldn't see Mr Elliott as a selfish bad person and the villain. He has committed a particularly unpleasant wrong.. he has refused to help a sick impoverished widow who had claims on him. He has left Mrs Smith in sickness and poverty. He has married a woman for her money and then been unkind to her. He seduces Mrs Clay and is possibly planning to ditch her once he gets her away from Sir Walter.
