Are you new?

Persuasion is usually my second favourite, for many of the reasons you suggest.

(But I am an easily swayed -- can I call myself a Janite? -- since I often think that the last one I read is higher in my preferences than it had been before I picked it up.)

The literary references, and maturity of outlook, and the fact that Capt. Wentworth is loved, at the end, with a not-blind, yet deepening love, all tie together a very affecting, warm story. On reflection, I can see the arguments that some of the subplots seem unfinished, but it never strikes me when I am reading. While I am reading about Anne's abortive attempts at serenity, and Frederick's inability to keep to his resolution to keep Anne out of his thoughts and emotions, I get swept up in the world all over again.
