Catherine's mother

in consequence of the missive, guidance for Catherine, penned by Kresel
seems so infinitely practical! her comments going to the Allens, and then her reproofs using "Richard's cravats" as an example. =) And, I think someone below mentioned this, but when Catherine lights up after the entrance of HT, what does her mother think? "Catherine meanwhile,--the anxious, agitated, happy, feverish Catherine,--said not a word; but her glowing cheek and brightened eye made her mother trust that this good-natured visit would at least set her heart at ease for a time, and gladly therefore did she lay aside the first volume of the Mirror for a future hour." I think it's funny that she totally seems to miss Catherine's love for HT! =) I agree that she's a great parent too and I can see her real love for Catherine. Btw, I'm nearing the final stretch of listening to the story, and I picked up on something I don't think happens in any other JA book: when the H and H meet again at the end more or less for the proposal scene, it's usually told from the heroine's perspective. But in NA, we see a bit of it from Mrs. Morland's perspective, as she's up (in the attic?) looking for the Mirror and it's only when she comes down that she discovers that HT has come while she was upstairs! Then we see it from her perspective still that she needs to maintain the conversation and see that their guest is comfortable and it's only after they leave the house to visit the Allens does it first revert to the narrator's like I think it usually does (MP springs to mind =) |
