Mothers   Written by Ceilti (4/25/2003 12:58 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: Catherine's Three Mother Figures, penned by Cheryl
Are you new?

] Mrs. Tilney: This is the one which surprised people. How can she be a Mother Figure when she is dead? Ms. Casal contends that Mrs. Tilney has a very strong presence at NA and Catherine's fantasies about her propels much of the action there. She also reflects Catherine’s longing for a Mother Figure to explain what’s wrong at Abbey.

] What do you think of this list? Especially the Mrs. Tilney item?

I think the list is quite accurate as far as Catherine's real mother and Mrs. Allen go. Mrs. Tilney is a bit more tenuous. I've always thought that Catherine admired and emulated Miss Tilney a great deal. I think Miss Tilney represented real elegance to Catherine and that Catherine responded to this.

As Miss Tilney is undoubtly a product of Mrs. Tilney's upbringing I can see a desire of Catherine to have known her and to feel a fascination with her that fed Catherine's fantasy life.
