I still don't think it's Eleanor's nature - I think it was something she was forced to do occassionally. When she was talking to Catherine, it was implied that this would be a one time deal just to make sure that Catherine got home alright, not a continuing correspondence. And I think that Frederick would be sensible enough to write to Eleanor using things that she would be able to read aloud as well as any personal tidbits within that she just wouldn't mention!
