Captain Tilney as a brother   Written by Shir (4/24/2003 9:13 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: Well, I guess I can accept that, penned by Siobhan
Are you new?

] ] I do think he was probably good company and a loving brother. That does not mean he doesn't have some character flaws. ;-)

] Well, I've never really believed he was without any flaws. ;-) But I'm glad to see you can accept him as a loving brother and good company. I should have liked to have known him better.

I believe Captain Tilney’s best recommendation is his brother’s & sister’s love towards him. As I said in an earlier post, I believe the 3 siblings are very close and protective of each other. Well, at least Henry & Eleanor are protective. The following is I thinkis the only time Eleanor mentions Frederick to Catherine (prior to the alleged engagement) :
"I have no sister, you know--and though Henry--though my brothers are very affectionate, and Henry is a great deal here, which I am most thankful for, it is impossible for me not to be often solitary."
She mentioned only Henry, but corrected herself immediately.
(Sweet Eleanor would never show the family’s dirty clothes to Catherine)
I think that slip is very telling. They are both very affectionate, but Frederick chooses to stay away, he leaves Eleanor along with her father. He doesn’t even write!
I might forgive him for flirting with Isabella, I can understand his running away from his father, but I believe he neglects Eleanor. That is unpardonable!
