I think that you have determined the situation. I believe that the General feels that Catherine has already seen all that is grand about the Abbey, and those narrower passages and less grand apartments are impressive enough.
The rest of the mystery about it seems to me to be mostly in Catherine's head. It probably never occurred to the General that Catherine would want to see the room where his wife died. Why would he believe it to be of interest to her?
