Volume II chapters 8-16   Written by Emmeline (4/21/2003 8:36 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: A few questions...., penned by Christen M
Are you new?

] 1) What is a Montoni? In chapter 23, line 192, Catherine describes the General as having "the air and attitude of a Montoni."

] Does anyone know what this is?

Montoni owns Udolpho, the semi-ruinous castle high in the Apennines. He is the stepuncle of the heroine, Emily. During the central part of the novel she is forced to stay in the castle, where she and her aunt are tyrannised by Montoni. During this time she experiences constant terrors and dangers, many real, some imagined. His wife, Emily's aunt, dies as a result of his persecution and imprisonment of her.

] 2) Has the "LOL Lines, Week 4" post begun yet? :) I seemed to find a lot of them this afternoon.

Not yet, I'll start it now. There are many good lines, but I'll only write one from each chapter:

8 'This lengthened absence, these solitary rambles, did not speak a mind at ease, or a conscience void of reproach.'
9 She beheld what fixed her to the spot and agitated every feature.
10 Of the Alps and Pyrenees, with their pine forests and their vices, they might give a faithful delineation; and Italy, Switzerland, and the South of France, might be as fruitful in horrors as they were there represented.
11 'Why! - How can you ask the question? - Because no time is to be lost in frightening my old housekeeper out of her wits, - because I must go and prepare a dinner for you to be sure.'
12 'I wear nothing but purple now: I know I look hideous in it, but no matter - it is your dear brother's favourite colour.'
13 ...and he left Northanger earnestly regretting that any necessity should rob him even for an hour of Miss Morland's company, and anxiously recommending the study of her comfort and amusement to his children as their chief object in his absence.
14 ... - But my affair is widely different; I bring back my heroine to her home in solitude and disgrace; and no sweet elation of spirits can lead me into minuteness. ...
15 I have united for their ease what they must divide for mine. Catherine, at any rate, heard enough to feel, that in suspecting General Tilney of either murdering or shutting up his wife, she had scarcely sinned against his character, or magnified his cruelty.
16 ...,I leave it to be settled by whomsoever it may concern, whether the tendency of this work be altogether to recommend parental tyranny, or reward filial disobedience.

] 3) Are we allowed to post on previous chapters? ie. stuff from last week's read. (I didn't have much time to get online last week.) I suppose I could just as easily post what I wanted without the 'GR' if that would make a difference. Just wondering.

Yes, I believe we are allowed to post on all the chapters this week.
