I do not see it as harsh Written by Rae (4/21/2003 6:18 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Poor Catherine, penned by Louise C

but as still in his ironic style. It is she who is harsh on herself, it seems to me, realising that mysterious chests are one thing, but murder is quite another. I agree that this is the central part of the novel, and is her growing up moment.
