] This just strikes me as so funny. I really do believe it's JA's way of adding comic relief to what is probably Catherine's lowest point within the novel.

Ah, but the "north and west" are Scotland and Wales, and who knows what could happen in those wilds, but in the Midlands? Henry told her to consult her own observation, and she's never seen such at home in the Midlands. Though she cannot vouch for the rest, of course. ;-)
